It’s time for some fresh thinking on Mental Health.

Currently 1 in 4 young people experience a mental illness like anxiety or depression. Many experts in this area are calling this a crisis and much talk is happening around Australia about solutions to mental illness, and we applaud those leading these challenging discussions.

But while mental illness is being widely discussed, the YMCA believe a fundamental key topic is missing from the conversation: mental wellness. We believe that when young people are inspired and engaged in their communities they live lives that are happy and mentally well.

On May 28, 2018 the YMCA is hosting a Youth Summit that aims to facilitate conversation and challenge the way we think about, respond to, and approach youth mental health and wellbeing. The summit aims to expand the conversation beyond mental illness to focus on the importance of good mental health and wellbeing and how we all have a role to play.

That’s why we’re inviting passionate Australians – young and old, activists and experts – to come together and spend a day discussing mental health and wellbeing for young people and help to answer a simple question:

In a time of unprecedented mental health concern for young people, how can we help more young people avoid the pain of mental illness in the first place?

At the summit you will hear from the people most affected by this issue: young people themselves. The program led by young people will inspire an audience of 300 young people. Young speakers will share passionate personal stories and share their perspectives on changes Victoria needs to make.

We’re interested in new ideas, possible solutions and most importantly the perspective of young people on one of the most important issues we all face. Along the way, we’re aiming to:

  • Inspire young people;
  • Increase the understanding of mental health and wellbeing among both experts and young people;
  • Promote wellbeing and resilience through personal development skills and tools; and
  • Connect young people with programs and services.

Join us for an afternoon of inspiration, positive thinking, and action.

Through inspired talks, workshops and surprises focused on creating real action – the future of youth mental health and wellbeing is bright.
